Trendy Color Combos: Brown and Plum

Every year, new colors become trendy in the interior design world. One year it may be pink, the next it's turquoise, the year after that it's orange. One of this year's trendy color combinations is the pairing of warm, chocolatey brown and elegant plum purple. These two colors can be used in nearly every room of the home and can be included in kitchen designs, bathroom designs, bedroom designs and beyond.

Brown and plum are particularly easy colors to work with. To start, whatever room you are designing, the furniture or cabinetry can be done in warm wood tones. For example, in living room designs, the coffee table, side tables and media center may all be done up in deep ebony wood tones or in dark, warm walnut tones.

The walls can then be painted a shade of plum. However, plum can be overwhelming since it is such a dark, luxurious color. So it's perfectly acceptable to pair this hue with a shade a few hues lighter and use the plum as an accent wall color instead.

On a side note, because the furniture for this color combination is in neutral shades, you'll find that when plum is out and a new color comes in, it's easy to update with a fresh coat of paint. Good interior design is always versatile and this color combination is no exception.

For wall decor, floral prints are perfect for accenting this color combination. Oil paintings of violets, calla lilies or lavender are all perfect options. You can also pair this color combination easily with other botanical prints.

It is not out of the question to add in a third color to this color scheme. Green is a perfect choice. Good decorating ideas, whether they be decorating ideas for living rooms or bedroom decorating ideas, always include versatility. Deep, rich greens or even light hues of green work perfectly alongside this color combination.

Other color option to add into the space could be light shades of linen. Remember, plum and brown are both rich, deep colors and they can easily become overwhelming. Pairing an accent wall in either hue with linen colored walls is always recommended, as these shades can make the room feel dark. However, you can also pair linen colored accessories with the room, such as curtains and upholstery, to help keep the space light and airy without taking away from the overall color scheme of the room.

Easy and Affordable Bedroom Decorating Techniques

A bedroom is perhaps the most personal room in your house. It is where you take a moment to relax and unwind after a stressful day at work, and it holds some of your deepest secrets. It is also the place where you spend intimate moments with the ones closest to your heart. Your bedroom should therefore radiate comfort and be a direct reflection of your personality. The following are some bedroom decorating tips that can help you accomplish this goal even on a tight budget.

Before anything else, you must first choose a theme for your bedroom. The color scheme and other decorations will then have to be chosen according to that theme. Remember that the theme you choose should reflect your personality so that you will always feel at home in your bedroom. For example, if you are a book lover then you may use books as the general theme of your bedroom and hang framed pictures of your favorite books as wall decor. Make sure that you choose a theme that will be easy to work with in case you decide to redecorate after a few months.

After deciding on the theme, you will then have to choose a color scheme for your bedroom. Bear in mind that a bedroom is a place for you to relax, so choose warm and soothing colors. Choose wallpapers or paints that are interesting and easy on the eyes. Choosing accents that contrast with the general color of the room is a good way to add a bit of personality to the color scheme without making it too garish.

Your linen and bedroom accessories should, of course, complement the theme and color scheme. Changing linens and accessories like lampshades and rugs does not have to be a costly affair. You can do a simple mix and match of the ones you already have, or scour your local thrift stores and yard sales for some good material. And if budget is really tight, simply changing the general "look" of your linen and accessories can give your bedroom a fresh new look even without having to re-paint or change the wallpaper.

Finally, you need to work on your bedroom wall. Framed photos and artwork are great pieces to fill up wall space. As mentioned above, if you have chosen books as a general theme then you can hang pictures of your favourite books. If your bedroom theme is family then you may want to hang small pictures of members of your family and turn it into a family tree. You may also hang landscapes or nature paintings to boost the soothing atmosphere in your bedroom.

So, you see, redecorating your bedroom isn't really an expensive project. It just takes a little creativity and a bit of effort. Simply add a dash of color and turn some things around. Pretty soon, you will be relaxing in a bedroom that you can truly call your own.

Colorful Accent Walls Help Make Apartments Feel Larger

If your home is a small apartment, there's a great decorating tip which can help the space seem much larger than it actually is: Create a colorful accent wall. By creating one accent wall in your apartment which uses a splash of bold color, your eye will be drawn to that section of the room and that creates the overall impression that the room itself is actually larger than it really is.

This decorating technique is particularly useful for people who live in apartments, because it's much easier to revert back to "normal" when it's time to move. It costs very little in time or money to repaint your accent wall to match the rest of the apartment, but it makes an amazing design difference while you're living there.

If you've never heard of an accent wall before you're in for a treat. Essentially you design one wall of your room to be the designer focal point. The accent wall is generally painted a different color than the rest of the room - in fact it works the best when your accent wall is a bold, vibrant, or dark and contrasting color that really stands out from the rest of the room.

Keep in mind that this technique is used on one wall only, to help make it the focal point of your room. You don't want to use dark colors on all the walls in a small apartment space, because that will make the apartment look even smaller than it actually is. Making your accent wall a dark and vibrant color will enhance the overall room while leaving plenty of existing light that helps create a spacious feel. And since your eyes will actually be captivated by the accent wall itself, the room will end up feeling much bigger in the end.

The first step is to choose a primary wall in your apartment. If you have a wall that's already something of a focal point - in other words it's the first thing anyone sees when they walk in the door - then that's usually the best place to create an accent wall.
